High School Athletics

Dear Cougar Students and Families,

I hope this message finds you well as we begin another exciting season of athletics here at Detroit Leadership Academy. I want to take a moment to share an important reminder about the true foundation of our athletic programs: being a student first and an athlete second.

Participation in sports is a privilege, one that comes with great responsibility. Athletics provide incredible opportunities to learn teamwork, discipline, perseverance, and leadership. But above all, academics remain the priority. Our mission as a school is to prepare young people not only for success in competition, but for life beyond the playing field.

Balancing academics and athletics is not always easy, but it is essential. Practices, games, and training sessions require dedication and focus—but so do homework, studying, and classroom engagement. Success in the classroom builds the foundation for success on the field, and ultimately opens doors to future opportunities in college, careers, and life.

To our student-athletes: remember that your coaches, teachers, and administrators are here to support you. We celebrate your hard work on the court, field, and track, but we are equally proud of your achievements in the classroom. To our families: thank you for reinforcing this balance at home and encouraging your students to meet the high standards of both academics and athletics.

Let us continue to model integrity, responsibility, and excellence in all that we do. When we uphold the principle of being students first and athletes second, we ensure that our athletic program strengthens—not overshadows—the core purpose of education.

Thank you for your commitment, your effort, and your partnership in making Detroit Leadership Academy a place where both academics and athletics thrive.

Sincerely,
Ashely Knight
